DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> CORRECT DELIVERY INFORMATION
A successful and efficient delivery depends upon having
correct and full delivery information. We request
fullest information on our order form, this is checked
against our address checking system before orders
are dispatched.
This information follows through
to the delivery driver at the point of delivery. If
incorrect details have been supplied which cannot
be checked or verified then the delivery can become
more difficult or in extreme cases incorrect.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS > WHO LIVES AT
THE DELIVERY ADDRESS?
We would expect your order to be addressed to
the recipient by name. If the recipient is not usually
a permanent resident at the delivery address, we would
appreciate knowing the name or names of the main person
who lives at that address.
Example: Where
granny has come to stay for a few days for her birthday
Please address as follows:
Mrs F.A. Smith c/o Mr & Mrs Brown, "Rose
Cottage", Windy Lane, Snoggleton, Oxon. OX5 9BG
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> NEW HOME
Where a delivery is to someone who has recently moved
into the delivery address it may help us to know the
name of the previous people who lived in the address
to complete our check of the delivery address details.
This may be provided in our extra information box
at the end of the order form.
Where your gift is for someone
who has just moved into the house the same day or
within a few days we would strongly request having
a phone number to allow us to make contact with the
recipient if necessary. A land based number for the
new house would be good, a mobile very usefu,l both
would be invaluable.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> PROPERTY NAME OR NUMBER?
Where a delivery is to be made to named house in a
road, please check whether the property may also have
a number in that road even though you may not have
that number in your immediate address. This is very
important where a house may have been recently named
or numbered.
The reverse is also true where
you may have just a number for a house and records
show a name for that house. This is however less likely.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> FLAT NUMBER
In most main towns many addresses will be made up
of buildings with a flat number. These may be straight
forward numbers or combinations of letters and numbers.
Please be sure to supply these alphanumeric combinations
in a precise order as the order of presentation can
sometimes have meaning. Consider splitting up the
number with a single space to make it easier to read.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> FLATS ABOVE OR ASSOCIATED WITH A BUSINESS
Please check where the delivery address is for a flat
associated with a business. We would like to know
if the address is above XYZ Launderette it makes it
much easier to find. This could be included in the
delivery address even if it is not the official address.
Example: Flat 2 B, above XYZ
Launderette, London Road, Oxford, Oxon OX1 2ED
We would also value receiving
additional instructions where access to the flat is
from the rear of a premises, through the actual premises,
a separate front door next to the main premises front
door, a separate service entrance from a specific
road location and so on.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> IDENTIFYING THE PROPERTY
Particularly in a village location, it would be very
useful to be able to quickly identify the property.
If there is something significant about the property
like its colour, design, roof, height, please mention
this it could help.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> ROAD / STREET NAME
It is quite important to have a road name for every
address. Even in a smaller village having a road name
can help to overcome the fact of having two "rose
cottages" in the same village.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> VILLAGE / TOWN / COUNTY
We need to receive the fullest possible address details.
It is important to us to know the correct name and
spelling of the smallest hamlet/village in the address,
even though our florist may not be there. We need
to clarify the relationship with the nearest town
and locate the address in the correct county. Here
again as with the property name, we have many examples
in the UK of villages and towns of the same name.
This can often be qualified by the county.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> POSTAL CODE
The final check on the address or where a check
on the address can start is the postal code. From
a correct postal code we can normally pinpoint the
delivery address geographically or to the nearest
group of houses. We can also, hopefully, check back
to a correct address.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> DELIVERY ADDRESS TELEPHONE NUMBERS
We have no wish to spoil the suprise of receiving
the gift you have ordered. On the other hand we need
to be sure to complete the delivery of your gift.
We find increasingly that many people are not at home
or unable through illness to open the door when deliveries
are to be made. Having a land based telephone number
for the delivery address and a mobile number for the
recipient would be very useful
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> PRIVATE ADDRESS SECURITY
Whilst we appreciate that in this day and age everyone
needs different degrees of security on their property.
Levels of security and access to property can cause
various problems when trying to make a delivery.
Examples of this are:
- Security entrance flats with
coded or buzzer entry. Here a telephone number,
especially a mobile number for the recipient is
extremely valuable. Our normal conditions apply
for each service but deliveries may not be made
if entry is not possible. In some cases leaving
a calling card can be difficult with no letter box.
- Larger houses with longer
driveways or security gates often require a security
code for access or more likely personal intervention
by the recipient to open the gates. We need a land
based or mobile number to be able to attract the
recipients attention in these cases.
- Dogs or any other pets which
are loose in the area of access to the delivery
address will normally cause problems making the
delivery. We do not expect our drivers to put themselves
or your gift in danger trying to make a delivery.
Contact telephone numbers are essential.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> DELIVERY ADDRESS INSTRUCTIONS
We would value receiving separate delivery instructions
where a delivery is to be made to an address which
is difficult to find or more remote.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> SOMEONE AT HOME
We like to think that we a gift is being sent for
an occasion that there will be someone at home to
receive the gift. As a generalisation, if there is
someone at home and the address details are correct
then everything normally goes very smoothly.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> NOBODY AT HOME
When any of our gifts are delivered to a private address
where there is nobody at home, or prepared to answer
the door, this will immediately create a problem.
What happens in these circumstances
becomes a blend of the normal practices for the service
involved combined with the actions of the delivery
driver and the prevailing circumstances on the day.
In most cases a "calling
card" of some type would be left through the
recipients letter box to explain that a delivery had
been attempted. This card could carry more contact
or general information.
Further action will depend upon
the delivery service involved, these actions are for
guidance only and cannot be taken as the guaranteed
course of action.
Royal Mail: Gift will
be returned to the sorting office awaiting recipient
to collect or arrange another delivery by appointment.
Courier: Gift may be
left with a neighbour, left on the doorstep if the
driver considered it safe or returned to the depot
for redelivery another day or awaiting contact from
the recipient to arrange another delivery.
Florist: Left with a
neighbour, most likely, could be left on recipients
property in a "safe" environment, notified
to the recipient on their postcard through the door,
at the drivers discretion or returned to the florist
shop for automatic redelivery or awaiting response
to calling card.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> NOTIFY CUSTOMER OF ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY LOCATION
We would not expect to notify our customer where any
of the above actions have been taken and the delivery
has not been personally received at the delivery address.
We do however try to contact the recipient, where
a phone number has been provided by the customer,
for Royal Mail deliveries, where the recipient will
need to find their postcard and collect their gift.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS
> NOTIFY CUSTOMER OF PROBLEMS
We would contact our customer, if we are notified
that a delivery has not been made as a result of special
circumstances like the recipient being on holiday,
if there are address queries or another major problem.
DELIVERY TO A PRIVATE ADDRESS > INTERNATIONAL
PRIVATE ADDRESS
Please note that all the above information refers
to our UK delivery products and services. Similar
information for international orders would need to
be extensive but specific for each of the many countries
we cover. Please use the details on this page as a
loose guide to general thinking for international
orders.
